Back-to-School Wellness: A Guide for Parents

Gary Chapman’s well-known work on The 5 Love Languages reminds us that while we may all need love, we don’t all receive or express it in the same way. And the same is true, perhaps even more so, for children.
Understanding your child’s primary love language helps you meet their core emotional need for love and belonging in a way that actually lands. And from a neuroscientific perspective, when a child feels consistently loved and safe, their brain releases oxytocin (the bonding hormone), reducing cortisol (stress hormone), and supporting regulation, learning, and pro-social behaviour.
In short, love isn’t a fluffy “nice-to-have.” It’s neurobiological fuel for your child’s emotional and behavioural development.
While all children need a little of each, most will have one or two dominant languages that make them light up.
Start by intentionally observing:
How do they express love to you or others? Children often show love in the way they wish to receive it.
What do they complain about or request most often? (“You never play with me!” might be a clue that quality time is key.)
What makes their behaviour noticeably shift, positively or negatively? Did they become dysregulated after you forgot a promised playdate (quality time), or glow when you left a sweet note in their lunchbox (words of affirmation)?
You can also experiment, intentionally express love in each of the five ways over the course of a week and see what creates the strongest emotional response.
Let’s take a closer look at each love language and how you can weave it into daily life in simple but powerful ways:
These children feel most connected through physical closeness.
From a nervous system perspective, touch calms the vagus nerve, helping children feel safe and grounded.
These children feel most loved when they hear kind, encouraging, or appreciative words.
These children light up when they receive thoughtful tokens, even small ones. It’s not about materialism; it’s about being thought of.
These children thrive when they have your undivided attention.
These children feel loved when you do things to help them or make their lives easier.
Here’s the magic of understanding and meeting your child’s love language: the deeper the emotional connection, the more your child feels safe, regulated, and seen.
From a brain and body perspective, this means:
When we meet our child’s emotional needs with intention, we stop fighting behaviour and start working with the brain, not against it.
You don’t have to get it perfect every day, but the consistent effort to speak your child’s love language is one of the most powerful parenting tools you’ll ever use. It’s a daily invitation to deepen the bond, nurture emotional wellbeing, and raise a child who feels truly loved, not just in your eyes, but in their own heart.
So today, ask yourself: What does love feel like to my child? And then, go speak that love loudly, clearly, and often.
